How to Become a Licensed Massage Therapist in Texas — 5 Steps

The whole path, start to finish. No mystery, no fine print.

1

Enroll in a TDLR-licensed massage school

Texas only counts hours from schools licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. (That's the credential to check — massage schools in Texas aren't "accredited" like colleges; they're TDLR-approved. We're school MS1040.) You can enroll online and often start the same day.

2

Complete your 500 hours — up to 231 of them online

Texas allows 46% of your education to happen through online massage therapy courses — anatomy, kinesiology, pathology, ethics, business, and more. The hands-on techniques and supervised clinical hours happen in person at our Brownwood campus or another TDLR-approved school.

3

Apply to TDLR + pass the background check

Once your hours are done, you apply for licensure through TDLR and complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check through the state's approved vendor. Application and exam fees are set by the state and paid separately from tuition.

4

Pass the MBLEx

The MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination) is the national exam Texas uses, administered by the FSMTB. Our coursework is built around it, and we support you with MBLEx prep resources until you pass. You must be 18+ with a diploma, GED, or equivalent to sit the exam.

5

Receive your Texas LMT license — and keep it

TDLR issues your license, and you're legal to practice anywhere in Texas. Renewal is every two years with 12 hours of TDLR-approved continuing education — simple to keep up with once you're working.
