Curriculum FAQ

How much of the program is online? +
231 of the 500 hours — about 46% — are online and self-paced: anatomy & physiology, kinesiology, pathology, business & ethics, and most of health & hygiene. The other 269 hours are hands-on and done in person. Curious how the hybrid path works? How long massage school takes in Texas →
What has to be done in person? +
Your 269 hands-on hours happen at our Brownwood campus: massage technique, the hydrotherapy lab, CPR & First Aid, and supervised clinicals with real clients. In-person classes meet in the evenings — there are no weekend classes or clinicals.
How long does it take, and when are classes? +
Many students finish in about six months. Your online coursework is self-paced and open anytime — including weekends. In-person hands-on classes meet in the evenings only, with no weekend classes or clinicals.
Who can sit for the Texas license exam? +
To sit for the state exam you must be at least 18 and hold a high school diploma or GED, in addition to completing your 500 hours. Younger students can begin the coursework — the age and diploma/GED requirement applies at exam time.
What is the optional Elite Mastery program? +
Elite Mastery is an optional Advanced Clinical Internship of 225 hours, beyond the required 500, for students who want deeper supervised clinical experience. It's eligible after 250 classroom hours.
Is the school TDLR-approved? +
Yes. Texas Massage Academy is approved by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR), license MS1040, so your hours count toward licensure and you graduate ready to sit for the MBLEx and Texas state exam. New to all this? Becoming a licensed massage therapist in Texas →
